In 2019 we realised that 2020 would be our tenth year as a band and our thoughts turned to ways we could mark this forthcoming auspicious occasion. What about studio recordings of ten cover versions we’ve put in our live set over those nearly ten glorious (sic) years..? Good idea! A limited vinyl pressing only available at gigs and from our website, an unofficial release for our regulars – what can possibly go wrong..? In September 2019 we convened at North Down Sound and laid down seven tracks in one day, thinking that we’d return and do the other three at some point. After all, we’ve got plenty of time. It doesn’t need to be ready for a few months. There’ll be plenty of gigs to sell at. However, best laid plans and all that… At the end of 2019 we faced some unexpected and serious ill-health in the family. Then 2020 happened…

As lockdown set in it became apparent that we wouldn’t be doing any recording or selling albums at gigs any time soon. But it also became apparent that it was important we made the effort to release something this year, to show that music is something that makes life better, and to make a stand for some sort of normality. However, we only had the seven songs, and couldn’t get together to record any more. A dig into the archives turned up an unreleased cover version, and another two of a similar vintage that had only seen the light of day on fairly obscure releases, now hard to get hold of. All of these had been recorded by the MKII version of the band in 2013. These cuts were exhumed during the summer and remixed and remastered. They fitted in perfectly with the newer recordings and completed the set of ten required.

So here it is: “Decayed” – a celebration of ten years of making music for the sake of it – a not-for-profit cottage industry. We’ll try to sell a few off the website and we might cover our production costs. Or we may not. Maybe the free badges and stickers that come with the first one hundred copies will help us across the line. But when (not if) we all get back to gigging and we still have a few copies left to sell that may not be a bad thing…

STOP PRESS! Over the course of the pandemic, we’ve all now worked out how to record remotely. Soon after the album went into production the band put together another cover version for an online themed music night that we’ve been taking part in individually for the last few months. It turned out so well that we’re going to make this available as well for anyone who buys the album – we just haven’t worked out how yet! Probably a download, but watch this space!
